Some small towns have secrets and gossip. Ours had secrets, gossip, and that spooky woman’s voice on the telephone line. To be clear, this is no morality tale.
Warning: contains horror themes and occasional profanity
Author’s Note:
My father grew up with party line telephones out on family farms. Chatting to him one day, he told me about them – he described to me the big, wooden telephone and the ancient crank system. And he told me about the gossip you could overhear sometimes if you picked up carefully while someone else was on the line. Barbed wire fences were never used as phone lines in his experience, but they were elsewhere, and I thought it was a nice touch.
